G&J Lines "No 21" improved design rocking horse.

Circa 1900-1910

43"

This elegant lady was made by the Lines firm circa 1900-1910. She is very similar to the 'Celebration Hobby Horse' on page 88 of Patricia Mullins' book, that was the model for this restoration.

Sixpence arrived in poor condition but structurally sound. She had nothing left of her stand but hoof rails, irons and brackets, as well as one thistle disc intact on her chest. Despite her unglamorous and sad appearance and even standing next to grand gentleman, Clarendon, she won the heart of everyone who saw her and was always the favourite.

Sixpence has been restored to the highest degree of authenticity and is as faithful a recreation of the lovely No 21 Lines as we were able to achieve. Thank you to the kind and knowledgeable restorers in England who helped with the details needed to get everything right. You know who you are!

Her stand is a replica of what she would originally have had, made of oak stained to the same colour as fragments found under paint on the rails, with exact replica pillars turned in ash. The stand has been finished with traditional French polish and beeswax.
